Guild Appointee to Governance Committee

As an appointee to a governance committee, your duty is to contribute your considered thought and preparation to produce the best possible policy for the college. As a Guild appointee, it is imperative that you bring a special sensitivity to issues and concerns of the Guild. As you are no doubt aware, the Senate addresses the academic and professional aspect of our role as faculty, while the Guild addresses wages, benefits, and working conditions. (By the way, there is some overlapping of concerns between the Guild and Senate. e.g., both have an interest in the hiring and evaluation of faculty, but they come at them from different angles.)

It is not always easy to understand what falls into the purview of the Guild and we hope that this guide will be of some help. Consultation with the Guild president or the Guild Executive can supplement this guide.

Monitor and Promote the Role of the Guild

The role of the Guild is prescribed by Administrative Regulations, Board Policies and the Collective Bargaining Agreement. When the college makes certain decisions concerning the WAGES, HOURS, BENEFITS, AND WORKING CONDITIONS, it must reach an agreement with the Guild.


Communicate with the Guild Executive

Standing committee Guild representatives must communicate/report to the 1st VP or Guild Exec after each meeting. The standing committees are Academic Affairs, Administrative Affairs, Student Affairs and Campus Executive, which the Guild President serves on.
A report is mandatory for standing committee members for Academic Affairs, Administrative Affairs, Student Affairs, Campus Executive (Guild President). A report is also suggested for all other Guild and “Joint” representatives.
Use the online Committee Report form or create a report and email it to the 1st VP of the Guild. The form is available on the Guild webpage. If you choose not to use the form, the report should include:
Name of committee, meeting date, time, location, prepared by, agency you are representing, i.e., Guild, Joint Faculty. Include topic, brief summary & outcome.
Follow “Governance Best Practices” guidelines that are available in the "Tools and Resources" link within the Governance webpage (you may need to log in to SharePoint to access).


Protect the Interests of the Faculty

When the college decides that it would like to make certain decisions, it must reach an agreement with Guild in specified areas, such as the following areas:

Advocate for Faculty Interests

Ensure that issues pertaining to wages, benefits, and working conditions in general, and the above listed areas in particular are protected. It is essential that you advocate for faculty rights and make sure that all adhere to the collective bargaining agreement (i.e., contract).
